What to Write to a Friend Going Through a Hard Season
Share
Maybe your friend just lost someone. Maybe she's going through a divorce, a job loss, a diagnosis, or a season that just feels really heavy and unclear. Or maybe she just needs to know someone is thinking of her. You want to reach out, but it can be really hard to know what to say.
I’ve been there. And you know what I’ve done? I haven’t said anything. Or I’ve said something generic like God’s got you, or This season will pass. And while these are true, I’ve come to realize that these phrases have a way of skipping past the hard in a way that actually stings.
The truth is, your friend is in the middle of something hard and it deserves to be acknowledged. Today I want to help you do that.
Start With Who She Is
Before you write a single word, think about your friend — not just what she's going through, but who she is.
Does she love coffee? Is she someone who feels better when she gets outside? Does she love to create, to cook, to just sit and talk? What does she actually enjoy? What makes her feel like herself?
Start there. The most meaningful way to show up doesn't always start with the right words — it starts with knowing your person well enough to meet her where she actually is.
Maybe that looks like pairing your card with a gift card to her favorite coffee shop. Maybe it's texting her: the weather's finally nice — can we go for a walk this week? Maybe it's just dropping something off without making it a big deal.
And if you're not sure — think about what you've needed in a hard season. That's usually a pretty good place to start.
The Template
Now let’s get to writing.
Did you know you don't need to fill the entire card? One or two lines is totally enough and can have just as much impact as a huge paragraph.
Whether you're sending a sympathy card, a thinking of you card, or just a note that says I'm here — it can still be hard to know what to write or where to even start. Here are two ways you can show up:
Option 1: A personal note
I've been thinking about you a lot lately, especially knowing that [what she's going through].
I can't imagine how [heavy / exhausting / lonely / hard] this season has been. I just want you to know I see you in it.
[Something specific — her favorite coffee place, an invitation for a walk, a meal you're dropping off, a practical need you're going to take care of.]
Option 2: A prayer
Lord, I'm lifting up [her name] today. I pray she feels held by You in this season and that you remind her she's not alone. I pray that [something specific to what she's going through]. Amen.
There's something really powerful about writing a prayer out in a card rather than just saying "I'm praying for you." It's something she can come back to more than once.
Showing up for a friend in a hard season doesn't have to be complicated.
A card is one of the simplest ways to do that. Unlike a text, it doesn't ask for anything back — it just sits there until she needs to be reminded of the message again.
Fun fact: Today is both Friendship Day and National Sisters Day.
