The Shop By Moment Guide

After designing cards for the last few years, I've learned one thing.. the hardest part isn't picking one, it's one small persistent thought… what do I even say?

You genuinely want to reach out. You want the person to feel seen. You’re ready to send the “perfect” thing. But there are so many options, and suddenly every word and every design feels like it’s either too much or not enough.

I’ve totally been there, and it’s why I wanted to make the decision easier.

Instead of scrolling through the whole shop trying to match a card to a feeling, you can start here.

Start with the moment she's in. Find the one that sounds like your person, and I'll point you to a few cards that fit, plus a note you can write inside. Everything you need in here to send the card and encourage her the way she needs it.

Here we go!

1. She’s always showing up for others

You know the one. She shows up without being asked. She remembers the little things. She's always thinking of everybody else. And she rarely hears how much she matters.

You don't need a special occasion for this. Sometimes the most meaningful card is the one that shows up in the mail on a random Tuesday.

Cards for this moment: Isn't She Lovely · This World Needs · Slow Down

What to write: Think about what one specific thing you appreciate about her. (Make a list of the top 10 things if you need and choose your favorite 1-2 things.) Not "you're amazing" but the one thing you love most. "The way you checked in on me last month meant more than you know." You don’t have to overthink it. But, try to be specific - it makes it even more special.

2. She did the brave, scary thing.

She started the business, left the job, or went back to school. She said the hard yes (or the even harder no). Whatever it was, it took guts. And she’s probably subtly wondering if she made the biggest mistake.

This is your chance to be the voice that says keep going.

Cards for this moment: You Got This · Strongest Woman · She Chose Faith

What to write: Tell her you see the courage it took, then remind her you're in her corner. "Not everyone would've been brave enough to do this. I'm so proud of you, and I'm cheering you on the whole way."

3. It's been too long and you miss her

Life gets busy and chaotic. You mean to connect with her but time passes by and before you know it, it’s been months since you’ve checked in. That friend you meant to text, is still sitting in the back of your mind and you want to do something.

Sending her a card is a low-pressure way to say I haven't forgotten about you without needing to explain the gap or even fill it. It’s simple, and it's a thoughtful way to reconnect.

Cards for this moment: Let's Grab Coffee · His Eye is on the Sparrow · Isn't She Lovely

What to write: Keep it warm and easy. "You've been on my mind lately and I realized it's been way too long. Coffee soon? I'd love to catch up!"

4. For When there's something worth celebrating

Good news deserves more than a quick passive comment on a social media post. A new home, a promotion, a milestone, a season of gratitude - the big and small wins are all worth marking. Sending her a card makes the moment feel like the moment all over again.

Cards for this moment: Let's Eat Cake · YAY! · Isn't She Lovely

What to write: Celebrate her, then make it personal. "I'm so happy for you — nobody deserves this more. Can't wait to celebrate together."

5. For when she’s facing a diagnosis

The call none of us are ready for. Cancer. A chronic illness. The kind of news that splits life into a before and after. You want to say something, but "get well soon" feels insulting when the definition of get well seems so arbitrary.

You don't have to define the moment or make her feel better. You just have to remind her she's not walking into it alone.

Cards for this moment: Hold onto Hope · You Alone · She Chose Faith

What to write: "I don't have words big enough for this. But I'm here for all of it — the hard days and the ordinary ones. You're not facing this alone."

6. For when she's in the thick of a mental health battle

This is one nobody makes a card for. You have a friend who is admitted into the hospital for her mental health, or maybe she’s in a hard stretch of depression.  It’s the kind of struggle people tend whisper about instead of showing up. Which is exactly why a card that says I see you and I'm not scared of this means so much.

Showing up here, without hesitating, is one of the most loving things you can do to support her..

Cards for this moment: Healing is a Journey · It's Okay · Sparrow

What to write: Be steady and unafraid. "There's nothing about you that's too much for me. I'm glad you're getting the care you deserve, and I'll be right here when you're ready."

7. For when they’re walking through recovery

Getting sober. Staying sober. Marking a month, a year, the quiet daily work nobody sees. Recovery is one of the bravest things a person can do, and it can be isolating for many different reasons.

A card is a way to say I see how hard this is, and I'm proud of you for doing it anyway.

Cards for this moment: Healing is a Journey · You Got This · Strongest Woman

What to write: What you're doing takes more courage than most people will ever understand. I'm proud of you, today and every day.

8. For when she’s aching to become a mother

She’s in the midst of waiting, hoping and experiencing heartbreak all over again. Infertility and the longing for a child is a grief that often goes unspoken, carried quietly by women who are still expected to smile through baby showers and pregnancy announcements.

A card that acknowledges her pain can change her world and make her feel less alone.

Cards for this moment: Keep Praying · Good Remains · Hold Onto Hope

What to write: Honor the longing without trying to solve it. "I know this road is heavier than most people see. I'm holding hope with you, and I'm here for every part of it."

Still not sure?

That's okay. Sometimes the moment you're shopping for is more complicated than any category can hold. And that's exactly why The Lovely Letter Co. exists.
